Abstract

Tourism is now a key part of urban economies and is vital for the survival of some small towns. At the same time, it shapes everyday life and identity in the communities that host visitors. This thesis presents the full design process for redesigning Strandhotellet in Vejers Strand, Denmark, with the goal of improving both tourism and local everyday life. The project is based on the idea that tourism and local life do not have to be separate: by putting local needs first, it creates a place where visitors become temporary participants rather than passive observers. The final proposal is a mixed program—a combination of functions—that includes a communal kitchen, workshop area, community hall, visitor center, exhibition space, accommodation, and flexible outdoor areas. As a new community hub, the design focuses on the surrounding natural environment and offers visitors a new way to experience the West Coast.
