Abstract

Dette projekt undersøger brugen af antipsykotisk medicin blandt ældre patienter med demens. I 2007 udsendte Sundhedsstyrelsen en retningslinje med en øvre grænse for, hvor meget antipsykotika en ældre med demens bør få. Vi analyserer data, der følger de samme patienter over tid (longitudinelle data), ved hjælp af en lineær mixed-effects-model med tilfældige intercepts. Denne statistiske metode tager højde for forskelle mellem patienter og udvikling over tid og gør det muligt at vurdere, hvor stor betydning forskellige faktorer har for medicinforbruget. Resultatet er, at retningslinjen ikke førte til et fald i brugen. Selv når der justeres for andre forhold, stiger forbruget over tid – også efter retningslinjen blev indført.

This project examines the use of antipsychotic medication among older patients with dementia. In 2007, the Danish Health and Medicines Authority issued a guideline that set an upper limit on how much antipsychotic medicine an older person with dementia should receive. We analyzed data that follow the same patients over time (longitudinal data) using a linear mixed-effects model with random intercepts, a statistical approach that accounts for differences between patients and changes over time. The model estimates how different factors relate to medication use. The results show that the guideline did not lead to a reduction in use. Even after adjusting for other variables, antipsychotic use increased over time, including after the guideline was introduced.
