Abstract

Western societies face mounting pressure on eldercare, and socially assistive robots (SAR) are proposed as a potential supplement. This thesis examines whether and how such a robot can be developed and accepted by applying participatory design (PD) alongside established acceptance factors for older users. In a one-year collaboration with a nursing home, the team conducted initial meetings and workshops with residents and caregivers, shadowed staff, and iteratively prototyped and built a robot. The robot was trialed in a 12-day intervention aimed at supporting residents’ morning routines, including waking them up. Findings indicate that PD and acceptance knowledge helped align the robot’s functions and behavior with user needs, and that the robot was accepted within the intervention period. The thesis outlines implications and lessons learned for the design and deployment of SAR in eldercare.
