Abstract

China’s development is under pressure from a sustainability perspective. Strained resources and stagnant growth have prompted the government to introduce a new, broad urbanization plan, seeing city growth as key to sustainable development. Because the plan is high-level, there is room for additional ideas. This thesis examines urban agriculture—growing food in and around cities—as a potential way to support sustainable urbanization and strengthen food security in China. Urban agriculture brings together social and ecological aspects of sustainability and could make existing policies more effective.
