Aftagende ressourcer og stagnerende vækst har fået regeringen til at lancere en ny, overordnet plan for urbanisering, fordi byernes udvikling anses som nøglen til mere bæredygtig vækst. China’s development is under pressure from a sustainability perspective. Strained resources and stagnant growth have prompted the government to introduce a new, broad urbanization plan, seeing city growth as key to sustainable development. Because the plan is high-level, there is room for additional ideas. This thesis examines urban agriculture—growing food in and around cities—as a potential way to support sustainable urbanization and strengthen food security in China. Urban agriculture brings together social and ecological aspects of sustainability and could make existing policies more effective.
