University-Industry Collaboration: The Case of Jammerbugt Municipality

Abstract
This thesis, conducted in collaboration with Business Centre Jammerbugt, examines how firms in Jammerbugt Municipality collaborate with universities and whether local barriers differ from those identified in the existing literature. It tests two related hypotheses: that proximity influences the types of barriers observed, and that the types of knowledge transferred vary within the municipality. The study combines a literature review on motivations, benefits, costs, and barriers with theories on the Triple Helix, economic geography, proximity, and knowledge types, and implements ten qualitative case studies of firms that have engaged in or attempted university collaboration. The cases explore motivations, benefits, costs, barriers, economic geography, and knowledge forms. Findings show a diverse set of barriers: some align with the literature, some anticipated barriers did not materialize during collaboration, and several differ from established typologies. Economic geography helps explain certain barriers and, together with other factors, contributes to challenges often rooted in firms’ limited understanding of how universities operate. Moreover, while most transferred knowledge was explicit, tacit knowledge also flowed across larger geographic distances when social and organizational proximity between partners was strong.
