This bachelor project examines which barriers young people with psychiatric diagnoses face in and around the educational system. It looks at their experiences throughout their educational pathways and at how social work interventions can help bridge the gap between the young people’s resources and the demands made by schools and educational institutions. The project is driven by a particular interest in young people with psychiatric diagnoses, especially those who struggle to fit into society, and a wish to help ensure they have the same opportunities as peers without diagnoses. The project focuses on the barriers that can arise for young people on the margins of the educational system, as well as the support options available to this group. The study is based on a hermeneutic approach to science and uses qualitative methods. The empirical material consists of interviews with three young people from the target group, one SPS counselor (Special Educational Support) and two IPS consultants (Individual Placement and Support). All interviewees are anonymized, and they come from two different regions in Denmark. The analysis highlights the young people’s own experiences and perspectives, supported by insights from professionals who work with this target group. To interpret these perspectives, the project draws on Erving Goffman’s theory of stigmatization, Howard S. Becker’s labeling theory, Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition, and Hartmut Rosa’s theory of the acceleration society. These theoretical perspectives are used to support and nuance the statements made in the interviews. The findings show that there are structural barriers within the educational system, as well as barriers linked to psychiatric diagnoses and the stigma surrounding them. These conditions negatively affect the young people’s self-understanding and their opportunities to participate and remain in education. SPS support and IPS interventions are analyzed as ways to reduce these barriers and to promote stability and relational safety during education. The project concludes by presenting possible action points, including expanding special educational offers for young people with psychiatric diagnoses and strengthening collaboration between IPS interventions and SPS support.
