Abstract
Sex tourism in Thailand has been widespread for decades and, while it contributes to the economy, it has serious consequences for children’s well-being. This thesis examines how the popularity of sex tourism affects children directly and indirectly through exploitation, abuse, and long-term psychological, health, and social effects. Using a qualitative, abductive approach, the study combines a literature review, interviews, and secondary sources, and applies thematic analysis guided by Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. The analysis explores the interplay of government policy, economic conditions, social and cultural attitudes, family and community contexts, and tourist behavior, organizing insights across macro-, meso-, micro-, and exosystem levels. The thesis identifies root causes and outlines preventive measures, discusses implementation challenges, and highlights the need for sustainable solutions, stronger legal frameworks, and cross-border collaboration to protect children in Thailand and beyond.
Seksualturisme i Thailand har i årtier været udbredt, og selv om den bidrager til økonomien, har den alvorlige konsekvenser for børns trivsel. Denne afhandling undersøger, hvordan populariteten af seksualturisme påvirker børn direkte og indirekte gennem udnyttelse, overgreb og langsigtede psykologiske, sundhedsmæssige og sociale følger.
