Abstract

This thesis examines how the concept of self-determination and empowerment is understood within the Danish welfare state and how that understanding shapes social work practice at Svenstrupgård. Drawing on empowerment theory, self-determination theory, and the strengths perspective, the study uses a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews. The central research question asks how social workers’ understanding of self-determination and user empowerment has affected practice in Svenstrupgård. Findings indicate that Svenstrupgård serves people facing severe challenges linked to homelessness, mental health, social exclusion, and substance abuse. The study argues that recognition, tolerance, and care can be more effective than expecting change, supporting service users’ autonomy and the possibility of more meaningful lives. It also suggests that while full reintegration may not be feasible for some, they can still live with dignity, purpose, and a sense of meaning. Overall, the thesis offers insights into the relationship between self-determination in the Danish welfare state and social work practice in Svenstrupgård, highlighting the relevance of the chosen theoretical frameworks for holistic support.
