Abstract

This thesis examines the growing collaboration between multinational corporations (MNCs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in emerging markets, asking how such partnerships evolve, where the resulting value comes from, and what types of value are generated. Using a twofold approach, it reviews the existing literature on cross-sector partnering and analyzes empirical evidence from several cases based on secondary sources, structuring the assessment with an input-output model. Despite differing missions, the reviewed studies and cases indicate that MNCs and NGOs are generally better off collaborating than confronting each other, especially in complex and uncertain emerging-market contexts where NGOs can contribute legitimacy, local knowledge, networks, technical expertise, and experience. The findings suggest that MNC-NGO collaborations can create and co-create multiple economic, social, and environmental benefits for firms, NGOs, and wider society, and that some social issues require collective cross-sector efforts. The thesis consolidates current knowledge on MNC-NGO collaboration and outlines directions for future research.

Denne afhandling undersøger den voksende samarbejdspraksis mellem multinationale virksomheder (MNV'er) og ikke-statslige organisationer (NGO'er) i fremvoksende markeder og adresserer, hvordan sådanne partnerskaber udvikler sig, hvor værdien kommer fra, og hvilke typer værdi der skabes.
