Abstract
This thesis examines how consumers perceive and evaluate AI-generated marketing communication in relation to brand authenticity and credibility. Drawing on a pragmatic philosophical foundation, it analyzes Reddit comments discussing Coca-Cola’s AI-based marketing campaigns from 2025. The theoretical framework combines Human-AI Co-Creation (HAICC) and Source Credibility Theory, which guide a qualitative thematic analysis and discourse analysis of consumer statements. The findings indicate that credibility is assessed through HAICC elements such as moral responsibility, with consumers perceiving that companies prioritize AI over humans in co-creation processes, and through perceptions of failed AI integration and training that undermine the perceived quality, persuasiveness, and accuracy of the campaigns. Authenticity is evaluated by comparing past and recent brand communication, focusing on efficiency, creativity, and the coherence of the brand voice. When AI-generated communication is seen as deviating from the established brand voice and the perceived process of creating that voice, consumers interpret this as a form of internal separation within the brand, which weakens perceived authenticity and trust. The thesis offers a nuanced understanding of how consumers interpret human-AI collaboration in marketing and how these interpretations can inform future strategies for using generative AI in the development of brand voice and marketing content.
