Abstract

This master’s thesis explores how the Hedegaard Silo at the Stigsborg Harbourfront in Nørresundby can be transformed from industrial heritage into a contemporary cultural destination through adaptive reuse. Motivated by the construction sector’s CO₂ impact—particularly from cement and concrete—it seeks alternatives to demolition and new build by reactivating existing structures. The core question is how new cultural and hybrid programs can be inserted into the silo while preserving and leveraging its historical and spatial qualities to support urban life and community use. The study combines theoretical work, case studies, context and conservation analyses, a user survey, and iterative design experiments in volume, program, and spatial organization, alongside structural investigations, calculations, and strategies for concrete reuse and upcycling. The outcome is a design framework and a proposal that converts the silo into a theatre and public hub with study spaces, café, restaurant, and bar to ensure activity throughout the day. By examining structural principles, opening strategies, acoustics, and daylight, the project demonstrates that existing concrete elements can be adapted and reintegrated more sustainably and illustrates the potential for industrial structures to contribute to contemporary urban development and public life at Stigsborg.
