Abstract

This thesis explores how the existing Hedegaard Silo at Stigsborg Harbourfront in Nørresundby can be transformed from an industrial facility into a contemporary cultural destination through adaptive reuse. The work is motivated by the environmental impacts of concrete—particularly the CO₂ footprint of cement production—and the need to limit demolition and new construction by preserving and reactivating existing structures. The core question is how to integrate new cultural and hybrid programs into the silo while maintaining and enhancing its historical and spatial qualities, and how such a transformation can support vibrant public life along the harbour. Using theoretical studies, case analyses, and iterative design explorations—supported by structural investigations and strategies for reusing and upgrading concrete elements—the project develops a proposal that converts the silo into a theatre and public hub, complemented by study spaces, a café, restaurant, and bar to ensure day‑long activity. The work addresses opening strategies, functional placement, acoustic and daylight considerations, and methods for adapting and reintegrating existing materials more sustainably. The outcome demonstrates the potential of industrial heritage to contribute actively to contemporary urban development and community life.
