Abstract

New “Super Hospitals” are being built across Denmark. As a result, many older hospital buildings will be vacated—this will soon be the case in Aalborg. This thesis examines how parts of these buildings can be transformed into innovative settings for new functions needed in the area, while respecting the site’s history, identity, and existing architecture. The main focus is sustainability, especially the reuse and upcycling of materials. Upcycling means giving materials a second life with equal or higher value instead of simply recycling or discarding them. The topic is timely because construction is a highly polluting sector. To meet the national climate targets for 2030 (a 70% reduction in emissions compared with 1990) and 2050 (climate neutrality), significant changes are required. Transformation and renovation of existing buildings are a promising path: a 2020 report by Rambøll indicates that renovation can cut greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 56% compared with demolition and new build. The thesis explores often overlooked opportunities in architectural renovation and transformation, with a clear vision to repurpose the existing building stock. The design concept “True North” proposes a vibrant, livable, mixed-use area for a wide range of users and the local community. True North demonstrates how modern sustainable design strategies can be integrated when adapting existing buildings—including strategic upcycling and reuse of materials.
