Abstract

Dette speciale undersøger, hvordan store virksomheder kan arbejde strategisk med FN’s Verdensmål (SDG’erne), da state-of-the-art peger på, at strategisk implementering ofte mangler. Formålet er at afklare, i hvilket omfang erfaringer med at implementere ISO 14001 kan muliggøre en strategisk implementering af verdensmålene i store danske virksomheder. Studiet bygger på 11 kvalitative interviews med repræsentanter fra fem store danske virksomheder, tre konsulenter og en repræsentant fra en dansk standardiseringsorganisation samt et usystematisk litteraturstudie. Interviewene peger på centrale udfordringer og muligheder; særligt udfordrer oversættelsen af verdensmålene til lokale mål en strategisk anvendelse og betyder, at verdensmålene ofte bruges som kommunikationsværktøj. Erfaringer med ISO 14001 fremhæver måder at undgå faldgruber og styrke succesfaktorer, herunder at prioritere færre og mere specifikke områder, opstille kortsigtede mål og måle fremskridt, sikre ledelsesfokus og medarbejderinvolvering samt fremme samarbejde med eksterne interessenter. På den baggrund præsenteres fem anbefalinger til strategisk arbejde med verdensmålene. Konklusionen er, at erfaringerne med ISO 14001 kan understøtte en mere strategisk implementering af verdensmålene i store danske virksomheder, om end ikke alle erfaringer kan overføres til at adressere alle udfordringer og muligheder.

This thesis examines how large enterprises can work strategically with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), given evidence that current practice often lacks strategic implementation. It asks to what extent experiences from implementing ISO 14001 can enable a strategic implementation of the SDGs in large Danish enterprises. The study draws on 11 qualitative interviews with representatives from five large Danish companies, three consultants, and a representative of a Danish standardization organization, complemented by a non-systematic literature review. The interviews identify key challenges and opportunities; in particular, translating the SDGs into local targets hampers strategic use and leads companies to apply the SDGs mainly as a communication tool. Experiences with ISO 14001 highlight ways to avoid pitfalls and strengthen success factors, including prioritizing fewer and more specific areas, setting short-term targets and measuring progress, ensuring managerial focus and employee involvement, and fostering collaboration with external stakeholders. Based on these insights, the thesis offers five practical recommendations for strategic SDG work. It concludes that ISO 14001 experiences can support a more strategic implementation of the SDGs in large Danish enterprises, although not all experiences are transferable to address every challenge and opportunity.
