Toward Organizing Practices Against Harassment and Precarious Working Conditions: An Intersectional Perspective

Abstract
This study explores how female migrant student workers can share information with each other to recognize and avoid precarious work and harassment. We conducted in-depth interviews and one focus group to learn how knowledge about unstable or unsafe working conditions and mistreatment circulates within this community, especially among those with limited financial means. Based on these insights, we propose a co-design approach (developed together with workers) to organize practical ways to prevent harassment and reduce precarious conditions. The study also makes visible how several disadvantages overlap: being female, financially constrained, non-Danish (EU or non-EU), belonging to certain age groups, having limited work experience, being a university student, and having little knowledge of labor rights or employment status. We analyze how these factors intersect and shape vulnerabilities. Our analysis draws on theories of intersectionality, knowledge distribution, and organizational learning.
Denne undersøgelse ser på, hvordan kvindelige migrantstuderende i arbejde kan dele viden med hinanden for at genkende og undgå prekære arbejdsvilkår og chikane. Vi gennemførte dybdegående individuelle interviews og en fokusgruppe for at forstå, hvordan viden om ustabile eller usikre arbejdsvilkår og dårlig behandling deles i denne gruppe, især blandt dem med begrænsede økonomiske midler. På baggrund af dette foreslår vi en co-design-tilgang (udviklet sammen med arbejderne) til at organisere praktiske tiltag, der forebygger chikane og mindsker prekære forhold. Undersøgelsen synliggør også, hvordan flere uligheder overlapper: at være kvinde, økonomisk presset, ikke-dansker (EU- eller ikke-EU-borger), alder, begrænset erhvervserfaring, at være universitetsstuderende samt manglende kendskab til arbejdsrettigheder og ansættelsesstatus. Vi analyserer, hvordan disse faktorer krydser hinanden og former sårbarheder. Vores analyse bygger på teorier om intersektionalitet, videndistribution og organisatorisk læring.
