Abstract
This master’s thesis examines how Destination Zealand in Denmark has managed the COVID-19 crisis and planned for recovery, with particular attention to innovation and sustainability. Against the backdrop of severe disruption to tourism caused by lockdowns and travel restrictions, the study applies theories of tourism crisis and disaster management, sustainable development, and innovation in a qualitative case study of a coastal destination. Data were collected in March–June 2020 and November 2020–January 2021 and include online/phone semi-structured interviews, content analysis, and secondary sources. The analysis considers prevention and planning, strategic implementation, innovation within crisis responses, and how sustainability was addressed before and during the pandemic. Early insights from the available material indicate the identification of innovative practices and the presence of sustainability efforts at the destination, while acknowledging that the pandemic and the transition to business not as usual are ongoing and evolving. The case-specific findings are not intended to be generalized but aim to inform knowledge sharing among similar destinations under the constraints of a rapidly changing situation.
