Abstract
This thesis examines dark tourism by comparing the perspectives of potential domestic Indonesian tourists and potential Danish tourists on visiting death-related sites and rituals in Tana Toraja, Indonesia. Using a qualitative, constructivist approach based on semi-structured interviews, the study explores how cultural background, historical interest, and personal perception shape attitudes toward three Torajan experiences that vary in perceived darkness: visiting graves, attending the Ma'nene ritual, and attending the Rambu Solo funeral ritual. The findings indicate a strong association between interest in dark tourism and a fascination with history, with most participants expressing curiosity about Toraja’s historical and cultural dimensions. By foregrounding participants’ own interpretations, the study offers insights into how cultural differences and historical curiosity shape engagement with dark tourism in Tana Toraja.
Denne afhandling undersøger dark tourism ved at sammenligne perspektiver hos potentielle indenlandske turister fra Indonesien og potentielle danske turister på besøg ved dødsrelaterede steder og ritualer i Tana Toraja, Indonesien. Med en kvalitativ, konstruktivistisk tilgang baseret på semistrukturerede interviews analyseres, hvordan kulturel baggrund, historisk interesse og personlige opfattelser former holdninger til tre torajanske oplevelser med varierende grad af oplevet mørke: besøg ved grave, deltagelse i Ma'nene-ritualet og deltagelse i Rambu Solo-begravelsesritualet.
