Abstract
This thesis explores how a theatrical lighting approach can be applied to urban spaces to make benches more inviting during evening and night-time. Framed as an audience–actor interaction between seated users and passing pedestrians, the work compares practices from theatre and urban lighting to enhance the atmosphere of place. A literature review addresses non-places, criteria for choosing a seat, and social interaction, followed by a pre-analysis that typologizes existing benches and lighting forms. Three case studies in new Copenhagen neighborhoods reveal recurring issues: higher illuminance on the audience than on the actors, fixtures mounted too high, and generally poor light distribution. Building on these insights, a design proposal uses theatrical strategies to reposition luminaires and adjust light distribution to improve the experience. Final tests indicate that light intensity influences spatial perception and, consequently, bench use. The thesis aims to demonstrate how theatrical lighting can complement existing urban lighting to activate benches after dark.
