Abstract
This thesis examines why tourists use Tinder in Copenhagen and who the “Tinder tourist” is. To understand their motivations, it draws on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (a model that ranges from basic needs to belonging and self-actualization) and Driver, Brown and Peterson’s categorization of “benefits sought” (a way to group the outcomes people look for in leisure activities). The study is qualitative and combines netnography (online ethnographic observation of digital interactions) with in-person interviews in Copenhagen. The findings map a diverse set of motivations: beyond seeking belongingness and love, tourists use Tinder to feel more local and to pursue self-actualization, such as personal growth and meaningful experiences. The thesis argues that Tinder’s capacity to create connections and expand social networks is helping shape what it means to be a tourist today.
