This master’s thesis investigates the clinically relevant therapeutic potentials of psychedelic-assisted therapy for psychiatric disorders and considers implications for clinical practice in light of past and present social, political, and clinical contexts. Methodologically, it synthesizes literature on mechanisms and brain effects, psychological and subjective experiences, safety, adverse reactions and therapy guidelines, and therapeutic outcomes in end-of-life distress among cancer patients, depression, substance use disorders, and PTSD. Across case studies and clinical trials, two broad potentials are observed: efficacy in treatment-resistant populations and indications that outcomes may exceed those of available conventional therapies. The thesis suggests that psychedelics, used as adjuncts to evidence-based therapies, could foster innovation within existing psychiatric care, while emphasizing the need for careful protocols and further research before routine clinical integration.
