Abstract
This thesis examines the intersection of blockchain technology (a distributed, tamper-resistant way to store records), digitisation, and the German healthcare system. Using a literature review, service design methods, and qualitative analyses of interviews, surveys, and workshops, it maps current perspectives and everyday challenges. The study finds that experts disagree on how relevant blockchain is for healthcare digitisation. Frontline staff who handle patient data report gaps in data protection, lack of understanding, and limited user autonomy (people’s ability to control their data and choices) in the systems clinics use today. The overall complexity of the healthcare ecosystem has produced isolated 'silos' that hinder communication, digital progress, and co-creation across stakeholders. From these insights, four focus areas emerge—digitisation efforts, use cases, user autonomy, and ethical implications—used to develop a facilitation framework called 'Consult together'. The framework is a practical guide for service designers to choose appropriate methods and bring diverse actors into co-creative workshops that can kick-start inclusive and sustainable digitisation in German healthcare. It is meant to be adapted to different contexts, used iteratively, and combined with other methods. In doing so, it aims to help break down silos and strengthen communication channels across areas of expertise.
