Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic was a major shock to global business systems, yet evidence on how industries in developing economies coped remains limited. This thesis addresses that gap by examining the resilience of selected Indian industries in their response to COVID-19. Guided by the research question of what levels and forms of resilience key Indian industries demonstrated during the pandemic, and what lessons can be drawn across sectors, the study adopts a multiple case study design. Five industries (tourism, real estate and construction, automobile, airlines, and hospitality) are analyzed using secondary data from one representative firm in each sector. Drawing on established resilience literature, the analysis assesses four dimensions—capital, strategic, relationship, and learning resilience—using indicators such as net sales and financial ratios from 2018-2021, alongside qualitative evidence from company disclosures. The cases are compared to classify resilience levels and extract cross-industry insights for managers and policymakers. While detailed results and industry rankings are presented in the full thesis and are not included in this excerpt, the study provides country-specific evidence from a developing context and highlights practical pathways to strengthen organizational preparedness for future disruptions.
