Abstract
Public debate in Denmark on immigration and integration is marked by concern alongside interest in recruiting foreign workers. Official indicators show progress in areas such as employment and education, yet declining Danish language skills and a weaker sense of belonging among ethnic minorities. Public libraries are widely seen as safe spaces offering support with language learning and social activities like language cafés. This thesis explores the potential of libraries to act as bridges between majority and minority populations and asks: How can public libraries promote intercultural sensitivity and help ethnic minorities achieve a sense of belonging in Danish society? The study combines a literature review, a national survey of 99 public library websites (using cognitive walkthroughs, inductive and quantitative analysis of multilingual information and immigrant-oriented services), and a qualitative questionnaire completed by voluntary patrons at Aalborg’s main library, analyzed with Grounded Theory to capture experiences of language cafés and the library as an intercultural social space. Findings indicate that libraries already assist immigrants in adjusting to life in Denmark, but there remains substantial untapped potential to strengthen intercultural competence and belonging.

Resultaterne peger på, at bibliotekerne allerede bidrager til indvandreres tilpasning til livet i Danmark, men at der fortsat findes betydeligt uudnyttet potentiale for at styrke interkulturel kompetence og tilhørsforhold.
