Abstract
This thesis examines the opportunities and obstacles for developing walking and hiking tourism in the Sierra de Tramuntana, Mallorca, through the lens of community-based tourism (CBT). Using a case study design, it integrates concepts of CBT, regenerative tourism, local participation and empowerment, knowledge sharing, and multi-stakeholder collaboration to explore potential environmental, social, and economic effects and to consider the goals and values that should guide development. The study employed qualitative methods, including 13 interviews with hiking guides, local community members, and destination management representatives, alongside immersive fieldwork and observations during four months on Mallorca with participation in numerous walks and hikes. Following an exploratory and explanatory approach, the analysis was organized around three themes: local perceptions of walking and hiking tourism, its impacts, and collaborations between stakeholders; it also addressed the current state of hiking in Tramuntana, positive and negative effects, and how collaboration can support CBT. The findings offer suggestions on opportunities and barriers for developing walking and hiking tourism and discuss how insights from this case can inform wider tourism contexts.
