Abstract
This thesis investigates how the configuration and semiotic systems of the redeveloped Budolfi Square (opened in 2019) shape user mobility, and how these dimensions influence accessibility through a mobility justice lens. Grounded in the Staging Mobilities framework, it combines literature review with on-site observations and visual ethnography focusing on the physical setting, the square’s semiotics, mobile ‘self’ versus mobile ‘with,’ and user–environment interactions. The analysis finds that mobility is clearly shaped by spatial configuration and sign systems as moving bodies make sense of their surroundings; a new user mindset—the consumer—is identified, and both accessibility and mobility justice are affected by retail planning, the site’s aesthetics, and the absence of informative semiotics. The character of the square also shifts with climate and user composition. The thesis concludes with recommendations for making public spaces appear more accessible.
