Abstract
The report describes a fictional children’s hospice on the outskirts of Holstebro, Denmark. It is based on an open architectural competition by Bee Breeders that gathered ideas for designing good children’s hospices. The project demonstrates the integrated design process: a collaborative way of working that brings social, environmental, and technical concerns—such as a healthy indoor climate—into the design from the start. The aim is to create a safe, comforting place for terminally ill children and their families in their final time together. The project also examines how to reduce the building’s global warming potential—the overall climate impact from materials and construction—by using modular construction and design for disassembly, so parts can be taken apart and reused. This can lower the hospice’s CO2 footprint and potentially influence future buildings.
