The Integration of Ukrainian refugees into the Labour Markets of Slovakia and Denmark through the Lens of Intersectionality and Precarity

Abstract

This thesis examines how Ukrainian forced migrants integrate into the labour markets of Slovakia and Denmark, and how the intersections of age, language proficiency, legal status and professional experience shape their opportunities. Using intersectionality and precarity as analytical lenses, it employs Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and data from interviews and participant observations to illuminate individual pathways in economic integration. The findings indicate that younger migrants with stronger language skills are more likely to secure stable employment and integrate more effectively, whereas older groups face significant barriers, including age discrimination and non-recognition of qualifications. Strong social networks and supportive community structures facilitate integration, yet systemic obstacles—such as non-recognition of credentials, age discrimination and the precarious role of temporary employment agencies—create insecurity and impede progress. The study underscores a gap between policy frameworks and lived experiences and offers insights to inform more effective integration strategies in both national contexts.
