Abstract
Udvikling af landdistrikter ses ofte som et spørgsmål om bedre infrastruktur. Med Femern-tunnelen, der skal forbinde Rødbyhavn på Lolland med Tyskland, står Lolland over for en stor mulighed – og risiko – for at påvirke turisme og bosætning. Dette studie undersøger, hvilke muligheder, risici og konsekvenser den nye forbindelse kan få for Lolland som rejsemål og sted at bo. Lolland har i nyere tid haft faldende tilflytning og et belastet image, bl.a. efter dokumentaren På Røven i Nakskov. Vi ser på, hvordan denne negative fortælling virker, og hvilke andre fortællinger om Lolland der også findes. Undersøgelsen bygger på en kvalitativ tilgang: seks semistrukturerede onlineinterviews og omfattende feltarbejde på Lolland. Vi anvender multisensorisk etnografi, hvor forskerne midlertidigt bosatte sig på Lolland og Fejø og supplerede med refleksive feltnoter og dagbog. Materialet er kodet i tre centrale fortællinger om Lollands udvikling, der tilsammen kan nuancere og udfordre den negative historie. Analysen tager afsæt i teorier om placemaking (hvordan fysiske, sociale og kulturelle værdier former et sted), bæredygtig udvikling, robusthed (resiliens) og fortællinger. Vi belyser, hvordan offentlige strategier, private aktører og lokale borgere arbejder for at tiltrække turister og tilflyttere – nogle gange i samme retning, andre gange i spænd med hinanden. Vi konkluderer, at Lolland i sin placemaking bør værne om immaterielle værdier som stedets identitet og tilhørsfornemmelse, hvis den negative fortælling skal vendes. Studiet bidrager med efterspurgt empirisk indsigt i, hvad der skaber et sted, og hvordan turisme og bosætning kan udvikles. Fremtidig forskning bør undersøge, hvordan store infrastrukturprojekter påvirker landlige destinationer, og om hurtigere forbindelser faktisk fører til mere turisme og bosætning i Danmark.
Rural development is often framed as a matter of building infrastructure. With the planned Fehmarn tunnel linking Rødbyhavn on Lolland to Germany, Lolland faces a major opportunity—and risk—to shape tourism and settlement. This study examines the possibilities, risks, and implications of the link for Lolland as a destination to visit and live in. In recent years, Lolland has seen population decline and a damaged public image, reinforced by the documentary På Røven i Nakskov. We explore how this negative narrative works and identify alternative stories about Lolland. We use a qualitative design: six semi-structured online interviews and extensive fieldwork on Lolland. Using multi-sensory ethnography, the researchers temporarily lived on Lolland and the island of Fejø and documented their experiences through reflective fieldnotes and a research journal. The material was coded into three core narratives about Lolland’s development that together can nuance and counter the dominant negative story. Our analysis draws on theories of placemaking (how physical, social, and cultural values shape a place), sustainable development, resilience, and narratives. We show how public policy, private businesses, and local residents pursue different approaches to attracting tourists and new settlers—sometimes aligned, sometimes at odds. We conclude that Lolland’s placemaking should protect intangible values such as place identity and sense of place if it aims to change the negative narrative. The study offers needed empirical insight into what makes a place and how tourism and settlement can be developed. Future research should examine how large infrastructure projects affect rural destinations and whether faster links actually lead to more tourism and settlement in Denmark.
