Abstract

Dette speciale undersøger, hvorfor mange singleplayer-spil med stærke fortællinger alligevel har lave fuldførelsesrater, og spørger: Hvor effektiv er historiefortælling som motivationsværktøj sammenlignet med andre belønninger? Projektet anvender teoretiske værktøjer fra spiludvikling til at forstå, hvordan narrative spil designes, og hvor de kan mangle i helhedsdesign. Undersøgelsen kombinerer udviklingen af en spilprototype, der illustrerer og afprøver designvalg, med et online spørgeskema, der måler spilleres motivation, engagement og lyst til at fortsætte, når belønningen er historieindhold. På baggrund af den indsamlede data tydede resultaterne på, at fortællingsindhold er en af de mest virkningsfulde belønningstyper til at fastholde spillere i singleplayer-spil—i en grad så nogle er villige til at udføre aktiviteter, de ikke tillægger stor værdi, for at opleve historien. Specialet diskuterer samtidig, hvordan designintegration kan påvirke fuldførelse, og peger på områder, hvor narrativt drevne spil kan forbedres.

This thesis examines why many story-driven single-player games still have low completion rates and asks: How effective is storytelling as a motivational tool compared to other rewards? The project applies theoretical tools used in game development to understand how narrative games are built and where overall design may fall short. The study combines a playable prototype, used to illustrate and test design choices, with an online questionnaire that assesses players’ motivation, engagement, and willingness to continue when story content serves as the reward. Based on the collected data, the findings suggest that story content is among the most effective reward types for sustaining player engagement in single-player games—even to the extent that some players will perform activities they do not particularly value in order to experience the narrative.
