Abstract
This thesis addresses Europe’s demographic transition, which is causing shortages of highly educated labor and intensifying the “war for talent.” Its aim is to understand which locations and environments young highly skilled international professionals perceive as attractive places to work, enabling firms to make better strategic location decisions. The study combines migration and location theory—including hard and soft factors—with a questionnaire capturing the target group’s perceptions. It develops working hypotheses and a set of categories for location attractiveness, and analyzes the importance of factors such as public services, social environment, health, employment and purchasing power, education, recreation, natural environment, and housing, as well as national differences and preferences for city size and regions. The findings provide initial insights into how location affects firms’ ability to attract young highly skilled international talent.
