Abstract
This thesis examines how migration is reshaping Lisbon’s communities and urban identity by bringing together the perspectives of migrants and local residents. The analysis is grounded in modernization, intersectionality, mobility regimes, and sustainable development. Methodologically, it combines document and policy analysis with qualitative interviews and relevant statistics to explore experiences of migration processes and integration practices. The study distinguishes between lower-income and wealthier migrants, contrasts views of older and younger locals, and assesses the role of government policies. A contextual chapter links Lisbon’s historical development to modernization, while key concepts—gentrification, social capital, digital nomads, and community—are clarified to frame the inquiry. The aim is to capture the emotional and social dimensions of neighborhood change and city identity. While this excerpt does not report empirical findings, the thesis concludes with recommendations for more inclusive migration policies.
