Abstract

This thesis examines how geopolitical disruptive events affect agricultural global value chains through a case study of the Ukrainian cereal market. It is motivated by recent shocks to the world economy, including COVID-19 and the 2022 Russia–Ukraine war. Using Transaction Cost Theory and New Trade Theory as analytical lenses, the study applies a qualitative design that combines interviews with policymakers and industry representatives with desk research drawing on reports, trade journals, and other sources. Through qualitative content analysis, it develops a conceptual framework that traces how the latest disruption propagates along the value chain—from inputs and production to export logistics and consumption. The core question is how such events alter structure, costs, and coordination in agricultural global value chains. The study contributes to global value chain scholarship and offers insights into vulnerabilities and adaptations in Ukraine’s agricultural sector during crisis, with implications for firms and policymakers.
