Abstract

Skilled hand drummers carry years of know-how in their bodies. This embodied knowledge is hard to put into words, but it shapes how they play. Digital instruments tend to be more expressive and intuitive when they extend this knowledge rather than replace it. This thesis explores how to design a hybrid hand drum—a traditional drum enhanced with sensors and electronics—that lets experienced percussionists build on their existing technique while exploring new digital possibilities. The instrument was developed iteratively over three design cycles in close collaboration with a professional percussionist, and then evaluated in a formal study with four trained hand drummers. Findings show that technique transfer was immediate and consistent across participants. However, the most expressive sensor-based interactions were rarely discovered without guidance. Future work should focus on signifier design—clearer cues that reveal what the sensors can do—to lower the barrier to independent discovery of the instrument’s full expressive range.
