Abstract
This thesis examines how Euroscepticism is framed and made meaningful within three European right-wing parties: Dansk Folkeparti (DF), Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), and Front National (FN). Against the backdrop of EU integration and rising support for Eurosceptic right-wing populist parties—highlighted by developments such as Brexit—the study outlines a theoretical approach to populism as a “thin” ideology (drawing on Mudde, Wodak, Pelinka, and Schori Liang) and introduces key concepts including in- and out-groups, anti-pluralism, anti-elitism, anti-migration, and hard versus soft Euroscepticism. Methodologically, it employs qualitative frame analysis and frame alignment to trace how party programs and ideological statements link Euroscepticism to national sovereignty, nationalism, elite critique, and migration. Each case is situated in its historical and political context and then compared to highlight similarities and differences in how Euroscepticism is articulated and legitimated. The aim is to provide a nuanced understanding of how European right-wing populist parties conceptualize opposition to the EU within their political narratives and what these frames may mean for the broader European debate. The excerpt does not include final findings or conclusions.
