Abstract
The thesis examines how Lady Gaga thematically enacts performativity and stages different identities across her career from The Fame (2008) to Joanne (2016), with a focus on gender and sexuality. Guided by Judith Butler’s theory of gender as performative, the study applies thematic textual analysis to selected lyrics and thematic visual analysis to music videos. The corpus includes the songs Just Dance and Poker Face, Born This Way and Hair, and Joanne and Million Reasons, alongside the videos for Poker Face, Born This Way, and Million Reasons. The analyses are contextualized by chapters on Gaga’s background, her Little Monsters fan community, and discussions of popular culture, fan culture, and subculture. A comparative discussion evaluates shifts over time and critically considers whether Gaga’s persona reflects a conscious strategy. As framed in the thesis, the analyses aim to conclude how Gaga’s persona, lyrics, and visuals have developed and how she challenges social norms around gender and sexuality.
