Abstract

This thesis investigates how the 2007–2008 global financial crisis affected National Innovation Systems through a comparative case study of Denmark and Romania. Guided by a qualitative systems approach, it integrates a theory-led framework on innovation and National Innovation Systems (drawing on authors such as Lundvall, Nelson, and Freeman) with an empirical analysis based on secondary sources, including OECD, Eurostat, and national statistics and central bank data. The study spans micro- and macro-levels by outlining key system components—knowledge, technological capabilities, human capital, and institutions—and examining how the financial system shapes innovation dynamics. It contextualizes the crisis by reviewing its origins, global repercussions, policy responses, and the roles of the state and multinational banks, and then assesses how financial developments during the downturn influenced innovation activities and capacities in both countries. The work formulates research questions on defining and structuring National Innovation Systems, describing national financial and innovation arrangements, understanding institutional roles, and identifying areas for improvement. Findings are not presented in the provided excerpt; the aim is to clarify how crisis conditions test and reshape national innovation performance and to derive context-specific lessons for strengthening innovation systems.
