Abstract
This thesis examines the liberalization of Australia’s electricity market and assesses how deregulation and privatization have affected formerly state-owned incumbents, using EnergyAustralia Pty Ltd as a case. It sets out the historical and institutional context for the transition from a vertically integrated, state-regulated natural monopoly to competitive wholesale and retail markets, with a particular focus on why EnergyAustralia has lost market share since 2001. Methodologically, it employs a qualitative single-case study based entirely on secondary data and literature, complemented by a competitor comparison with Origin Energy and AGL. The theoretical discussion covers the economic and political characteristics of electricity markets, vertical integration, and the objectives and governance of liberalization, while the empirical analysis focuses on market structure, firm effectiveness, customer switching, retail prices, competition, and contracting across Australian states. Delimitations and issues of validity and reliability are addressed. Although this excerpt does not present specific findings, the thesis concludes with observations on how liberalization reshaped competition and EnergyAustralia’s position, and offers recommendations for future research.
