Abstract

This study investigates how multiplayer mode in mobile games shapes players’ immersion and enjoyment, and whether these experiences are related. To address these questions, the author built an Android game playable in single-player and multiplayer modes and tested it with 22 participants aged 16–28. Enjoyment was measured with the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI), and immersion with the Immersive Experience Questionnaire (IEQ). Statistical analyses indicate that both immersion and enjoyment were higher when participants played the multiplayer version. A Spearman’s rank correlation showed a moderate association between immersion and enjoyment in single-player (rho≈0.5) and a very strong association in multiplayer (rho≈0.9). These findings suggest that the social dimension of play can meaningfully enhance mobile game experiences and that immersion and enjoyment are closely linked, particularly in multiplayer contexts.
