Abstract
The Dune is a proposal for social housing in Hirtshals on Denmark’s west coast. The project aims to raise design quality by using vernacular (local) design strategies that respect the landscape and town, together with alliesthetic principles—deliberate contrasts in materials, colors, and room proportions that stimulate the senses and encourage non-standard solutions. It seeks to honor local building traditions while attracting families and young people to counter population decline, and to bring more continuous activity and new gathering places to the harbor, which has long been central to Hirtshals’ development. The homes are intended for families, older residents, and young people. Varied materials offer different tactile experiences, and colors support the atmosphere of cozy bedrooms and generous living spaces. Spatial sequences that narrow and then open up make, for example, the living room feel larger when entered from a narrow hallway. Architecturally, the project uses familiar methods and materials to create new architecture. A typical cavity brick wall forms an exterior wall that gently curves in and out, and the brickwork is rendered to protect the building from Hirtshals’ climate. These choices support the “dune” concept, giving the building a dune-like appearance that balances the character of the surrounding nature with the town’s aesthetic. Outdoor areas link the building to its context with places to meet—around a campfire in summer and inside shared orangeries in wet weather. Paths connect the town, the harbor, the nearby dunes, and The Dune. Projektet vil hæve den arkitektoniske standard ved at bruge vernakulære (stedbundne) designstrategier, der respekterer landskabet og byen, og ved at arbejde med alliestetiske principper – bevidste kontraster i materialer, farver og proportioner, der stimulerer sanserne og åbner for utraditionelle løsninger. Målet er både at ære den lokale byggetradition og at skabe boliger, der kan tiltrække børnefamilier og unge for at modvirke den faldende befolkning, samt at skabe mere vedvarende liv og nye mødesteder ved havnen, som har været central for Hirtshals’ udvikling. Boligerne er tænkt til familier, ældre og unge. Varierende materialer giver forskellige taktile oplevelser, mens farver understøtter stemninger i hyggelige soveværelser og rummelige opholdsrum. Rumforløb, der skiftevis snævrer ind og åbner op, får for eksempel stuen til at opleves større, når man træder ind fra en smal gang. Arkitektonisk bygger projektet videre på kendte metoder og materialer for at skabe ny arkitektur. En traditionel hulmur i tegl danner en ydre væg, som blødt bølger ind og ud, og murværket er pudset for at beskytte bygningen mod klimaet i Hirtshals. Disse valg understøtter konceptet om “klitten”, idet bygningen får et udtryk som en klit og balancerer mellem naturen omkring Hirtshals og byens æstetik. Udearealerne knytter bygningen til omgivelserne med mødesteder – om sommeren omkring et bål og i regnvejr i fælles orangerier. Stier forbinder byen, havnen, de nærliggende klitter og The Dune.
