Abstract
This thesis investigates how and why the Danish People’s Party and the Sweden Democrats frame non-Western immigrants as a threat in their political communication. Drawing on theories of framing (Lakoff), nationalism, and nativism, it examines anti-immigrant discourse in Denmark and Sweden over the past two decades amid rising immigration and shifting debates, including discussions of Swedish exceptionalism. Methodologically, the study uses a qualitative multimethod approach: frame analysis of language and argumentation and multimodal discourse analysis of speeches and campaign videos that combine text, images, sound, and music. The empirical material includes a speech and a video by former Danish People’s Party leader Kristian Thulesen Dahl and a speech and a video by current Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson. The analysis addresses surface and deep frames to show how word choice, visual devices, and audio elements can construct particular values and emotional responses. As the excerpt does not present findings, this abstract outlines the study’s aim and approach: to clarify the mechanisms through which threat frames are produced and anchored in political and media discourse.
