Abstract
This thesis explores how Brazil’s nationwide protests in 2013, the hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the 2014 presidential election interrelate in a distinctive “Brazilian case.” The study combines desk research on the protests, the electoral process, and the outcome with fieldwork interviews to assess the World Cup’s role in voting behavior. Starting in 2007, when Brazil was awarded the tournament, the analysis outlines the socio-economic context and reviews the Lula and Dilma administrations to situate the protests. Findings indicate noticeable shifts in attitudes toward political representatives, yet public dissatisfaction did not produce a change in leadership: voters returned the Workers’ Party (PT) and Dilma Rousseff for four more years. Interview evidence suggests the World Cup contributed to triggering and shaping demonstrations but was not a central topic in the election debates, and most respondents did not view it as decisive for their presidential vote.
