Abstract
This master’s thesis examines what shapes families’ transport choices and mobility patterns around children’s organized sports activities. Drawing on everyday mobility and the concept of structural stories, it explores the underlying arguments and rationalities in two opposing narratives: one that frames independent travel as unsafe, and another that presents children’s independent mobility as a source of freedom and flexibility. The study is based on qualitative interviews and uses vertical and horizontal analyses informed by ideas from the mobile risk society, individualization in late modernity, and parents’ interpretations of traffic risks. The analysis unpacks how the mobility environment, children’s competencies, and notions of the good life and good parenting are woven into decisions about travel to and from sports activities. Findings indicate that both sets of rationalities are present in all families to some extent, and that actual choices depend on which rationalities are given greatest weight. This is strongly influenced by parents’ views of the good life, what good parenting entails, and their assessment of traffic risks.
Denne kandidatafhandling undersøger, hvad der påvirker familiers valg af transport og mobilitetsmønstre i forbindelse med børns organiserede idrætsaktiviteter. Med udgangspunkt i hverdagsmobilitet og begrebet strukturelle fortællinger analyseres de underliggende argumenter og rationaler i to modsatrettede fortællinger, der på den ene side beskriver uafhængig transport som usikker, og på den anden side fremhæver børns uafhængige mobilitet som frihed og fleksibilitet. Studiet bygger på kvalitative interviews og en kombination af vertikale og horisontale analyser, der inddrager perspektiver fra den mobile risikosamfundsforståelse, individualisering i senmoderniteten samt forældres fortolkning af trafikale risici. Analysen belyser, hvordan mobilitetsmiljøet, børns kompetencer og forestillinger om det gode liv og det gode forældreskab væves ind i beslutningerne om transport til og fra fritidsaktiviteter. Resultaterne viser, at begge sæt af rationaler er til stede i alle familier i et eller andet omfang, og at det afgørende for de konkrete valg er, hvilke rationaler der tillægges størst betydning. Dette påvirkes især af forældres opfattelse af det gode liv, hvad godt forældreskab indebærer, og deres vurdering af trafikale risici.
