Abstract
This thesis presents a design proposal for The Barn, a visitor centre in northern Skagen, Denmark, intended to manage and enrich high levels of tourism by guiding and educating visitors while serving as a cultural hub. The core question is how to create a context-sensitive, multifunctional facility that minimizes environmental impact and aspires to the Zero Energy Building standard while communicating Skagen’s natural and cultural assets. The project follows an Integrated Design Process combining site visits, a questionnaire administered via the Skagen tourist bureau, case studies of visitor centres, and multi-scalar analyses of infrastructure, microclimate, topography, vegetation, user needs, and the site’s character.
