Abstract
This project explores how the perceived ambience of urban places can be understood and measured within interaction design and HCI. It starts from the lack of validated tools to capture subjective experience, in contrast to instruments that quantify physical conditions such as temperature or air quality. The aim is to develop the Ambience Questionnaire, a survey instrument to assess how people perceive a place’s ambience. Items are derived from literature in interaction design, environmental psychology, and architecture, and organized around three influences on the transition from physical to perceived environment: situatedness (place and culture), sociality (the presence of others), and experience (accumulated knowledge). Data are analyzed with Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) in SPSS through iterative rounds, using factor loadings to refine and select items. The thesis also describes participants and data collection and discusses applications, limitations, and future work. Specific results and the final factor structure are presented in the full thesis but are not detailed in this excerpt.
