Abstract
This thesis examines a hybrid animation style that combines a hand-drawn, cartoon-inspired look with 3D computer animation of humanoid characters. It asks whether this blend is perceived as more aesthetically pleasing and likable when it evokes viewers’ memories of earlier cartoons. The study draws on the theory of memories, meaning that past experiences and mental associations shape how we judge visual styles. Through analyses and tests comparing the hybrid style with traditional 3D graphics, the results indicate a general preference for the hybrid approach. Viewers tended to rate it as more aesthetically pleasing and likable, consistent with the idea that it triggers positive associations from previously watched cartoons.
