Abstract

This thesis examines what determines acceptance of a home monitoring system for eldercare—The Intelligent and Caring Home System (TICHS)—from the users’ point of view. Based on 14 semi-structured interviews with four user groups (older adults, home care professionals, health care professionals, and relatives), the study shows that an in-depth understanding of users is essential for achieving successful innovation. The work is guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), a framework for understanding why people adopt new technology, and develops a context-specific, design-oriented version of TAM tailored to eldercare settings. The analysis identifies themes and determinants that are fundamental for accepting and using TICHS. Five central factors emerge: Function (what the system actually does), Usability (how easy it is to use), Ethics (whether the solution is perceived as appropriate and responsible), Experience (users’ prior experience and learning), and Facilitation (support, training, and conditions for implementation). These insights provide a foundation for the continued development and design of TICHS so that, in the future, the system can better meet the needs and expectations of older adults, professionals, and relatives.
