Abstract
This thesis examines how media art uses synthetic creatures—biotechnological hybrids and biorobots—to rethink life, environment, and ecology. The core research question asks what historical, philosophical, and technological preconditions have led to the emergence of synthetic creatures as a distinct phenomenon in media art, and why artists are motivated to create synthesized life forms. The study situates this practice along a trajectory from ancient animism through Enlightenment dualism to contemporary alternatives such as artificial life (ALife), embodied cognition, and hybrid ecology, drawing on Simondon, Latour, Ascott, Penny, and Whitelaw. Methodologically, it combines autoethnography during a research internship and the exhibition In Vitro Agencies (Solu Space, Finland, spring 2019), literature review, interviews with the artists and the curator, and case studies of cellF and Bricolage. Preliminary findings indicate that synthetic creatures operate as both analytical models and myth-making devices that mediate and challenge understandings of the technological hybridization of planetary ecology, foregrounding sentient technology, future coexistence, and a field that is actively developing its terminology.
Denne afhandling undersøger, hvordan mediekunst bruger syntetiske væsener – bioteknologiske hybrider og biorobotter – til at gentænke begreberne liv, miljø og økologi. Den centrale forskningsspørgsmål er, hvilke historiske, filosofiske og teknologiske forudsætninger der har ført til fremkomsten af syntetiske væsener som et særskilt fænomen i mediekunst, og hvorfor kunstnere er optagede af at skabe syntetiserede livsformer. Afhandlingen placerer praksissen i en udvikling fra oldtidens animisme over oplysningstidens dualisme til nutidige alternativer som kunstigt liv (ALife), legemliggjort kognition og hybrid økologi med reference til bl.a. Simondon, Latour, Ascott, Penny og Whitelaw. Metodisk kombinerer studiet autoetnografi under et forskningsophold og udstillingen In Vitro Agencies (Solu Space, Finland, forår 2019), litteraturstudier, interviews med kunstnerne og kuratoren samt casestudier af værkerne cellF og Bricolage. Foreløbige fund peger på, at syntetiske væsener fungerer både som analytiske modeller og som myteskabende elementer, der formidler og problematiserer den teknologiske hybridisering af planetarisk økologi, med fokus på sansende teknologi, fremtidig sameksistens og et felt i søgen efter sit eget sprog.
