Abstract
Rural areas are under heavy pressure as people and jobs concentrate in cities, and many small towns risk becoming empty and run-down. This thesis examines how the place-bound potentials of rural towns—such as their landscapes, cultural heritage, and local industries—can strengthen local identity and everyday quality of life (livability). Through a review of recent urban design literature, it clarifies key ideas like ruralism, livability, and place-bound potentials, and introduces the term rural livability to describe what livability means in remote and less connected settings. Building on this knowledge and a close understanding of the local context, the thesis proposes a holistic design strategy for Thyborøn. The aim is to link the town’s place-bound potentials so that residents and visiting tourists have equitable access to experiences, services, and spaces. The strategy offers both a general framework to guide development in rural areas and a context-specific knowledge base about Thyborøn. It addresses the town’s climate challenges, its peripheral location, and the planned tourism strategy. The work is especially timely as the COVID-19 pandemic has increased attention to what we have within national borders, with more Danes traveling domestically. Overall, the thesis shows how a holistic, place-based approach can reinforce local identity and improve livability in small rural towns like Thyborøn. The design strategy is presented and analyzed, and the thesis concludes with an epilogue that offers reflections for the future.
Landområder er under pres, fordi mennesker og arbejdspladser samler sig i byerne. Mange små byer risikerer at blive tømt og forfalde. Denne afhandling undersøger, hvordan stedbundne potentialer – såsom landskaber, kulturarv og lokale erhverv – kan styrke lokal identitet og hverdagskvalitet (livability) i små landbyer. Gennem et review af nyere byudviklingslitteratur tydeliggøres centrale begreber som ruralisme, livability og stedbundne potentialer, og begrebet rural livability indføres for at beskrive, hvad livability betyder i mere afsides og mindre forbundne områder. Med afsæt i denne viden og en grundig forståelse af den lokale kontekst foreslås en holistisk designstrategi for Thyborøn. Målet er at binde byens stedbundne potentialer sammen, så både borgere og besøgende turister får lige adgang til oplevelser, tilbud og byrum. Strategien fungerer både som en overordnet ramme for udvikling i landområder og som en kontekstspecifik videnbank om Thyborøn. Den forholder sig til byens klimatiske udfordringer, den perifere beliggenhed og den planlagte turismestrategi. Arbejdet er særligt aktuelt, fordi COVID-19-pandemien har skærpet blikket for værdier inden for landets grænser, og flere danskere rejser internt. Samlet viser afhandlingen, hvordan en holistisk, stedbunden tilgang kan styrke lokal identitet og forbedre livskvaliteten i små landbyer som Thyborøn. Designstrategien præsenteres og analyseres, og afhandlingen afrundes med et efterord med fremadrettede refleksioner.
