Sustainable urban transport and urban regenerations with the example of Hammarby Sjöstad and Stockholm Royal Seaport

Abstract

This thesis examines how urban regeneration—major projects that redevelop existing city areas—can encourage more sustainable urban transport. It draws mainly on the framework proposed by the British researcher Hutton, complemented by other studies, to clarify what sustainable urban transport is and why current regeneration efforts seek to promote it. The work is guided by four questions: what sustainable urban transport is and how it is encouraged in regeneration; how ideas about it at different levels have influenced the redevelopment of Hammarby Sjöstad and, later, Stockholm Royal Seaport; how projects like these can contribute to sustainable transport; and how regeneration more broadly can shift travel patterns toward sustainability. A case study focuses on these two award-winning districts in Stockholm, selected because they are seen as having good potential to develop sustainable transport systems. Methods include interviews and document analysis that together aim to show the complexity of sustainable urban transport. The thesis offers insight into regeneration projects focused on sustainable transport and concludes that large-scale regeneration can, under the right conditions, push the planning and development of sustainable urban transport forward.
