Abstract
This thesis examines how and why tourism businesses in Aalborg understand and implement sustainability, how Danish tourists understand sustainable tourism, and how important they consider it. Using a mixed-methods, interpretivist case study, the authors conducted semi-structured expert interviews with businesses across food and drink, accommodation, attractions, events and the local destination management organisation, and distributed a self-administered questionnaire to Danish tourists. Findings are interpreted through the three dimensions of sustainability (environmental, social, economic) and compared with existing literature. Results indicate that Aalborg tourism businesses implement both environmental and social practices, with environmental initiatives most prevalent. Danish tourists rate environmental sustainability as most important. There is alignment between businesses and tourists on environmental aspects, while tourists show limited understanding of social and economic sustainability. These patterns mirror trends reported in the literature.
