Abstract
This thesis examines the interplay between globalization, foreign direct investment (FDI), and sustainable development in Costa Rica’s electronics sector, with Intel as an anchor firm. Grounded in the systems of innovation framework and the notion of sustainable systems of innovation, the study adopts a transformationalist view of globalization and focuses mainly on economic globalization while acknowledging political and cultural dimensions. The core question is how transnational corporations’ FDI—within policy settings such as free trade zones and Intel’s establishment—shapes innovation capacity and social and environmental performance in a developing-country context. The research design includes a conceptual framework, innovation system analysis, and case studies of firms and institutions in the sector, supported by interviews. The aim is to assess whether and under what conditions FDI can contribute to sustainable systems of innovation in Costa Rica and to inform policy on managing transnational actors. The provided text is an introduction and research overview; specific findings and conclusions are not included in the excerpt.
